A Century of Community Banking
Since opening our doors on July 20, 1925, Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank has been dedicated to helping individuals, families, businesses, and agricultural operations achieve their financial goals. For 100 years, we have combined financial strength, local decision-making, and personalized service to build lasting relationships throughout the communities we serve.
F&M Bank was founded when J.J. Burbridge led a group of local investors in reorganizing the former Farmers & Merchants State Savings Bank following the agricultural recession of the 1920s. Under his leadership, the bank opened with assets of nearly $300,000 and established a foundation of prudent growth, strong relationships, and community commitment that continues today.
Throughout the decades, F&M Bank has successfully navigated economic challenges, including the Great Depression, while remaining focused on serving the financial needs of our clients. Following Mr. Burbridge's passing in 1950, R.E. Tool continued this tradition of steady leadership, guiding the bank until his retirement in 1983. At that time, Mr. Tool sold controlling interest to Cecil W. Dunn and his family.
Growing Alongside Our Communities
As our clients' needs evolved, so did F&M Bank.
Over the years, we have expanded our facilities and services to better serve our communities:
- Opened our first drive-up facility in Manchester in 1974 to provide added convenience and extended banking hours.
- Completed a major renovation and expansion of our Manchester headquarters in 1975, tripling the size of the facility and adding community gathering space.
- Expanded into Cedar Rapids in 1994 and continued growing with additional locations in 1999 and 2002.
- Entered the Anamosa market in 2004, followed by Monticello in 2014.
- Expanded beyond Iowa for the first time in 2010 through the acquisition of two locations in Minnesota - Lino Lakes and Vadnais Heights.
Our history also reflects our resilience. Following the devastating Cedar Rapids flood of 2008, our team worked diligently to restore banking services and rebuild damaged facilities, reaffirming our commitment to the communities we serve during both prosperous and challenging times.
Today, ownership and leadership continue through the Dunn family, whose involvement spans three generations and reflects a long-term commitment to independent community banking.
Celebrating 100 Years
In 2025, F&M Bank proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, we welcomed more than 2,000 community members to a block party at our Manchester headquarters featuring live music, local food vendors, and a celebration of the relationships that have made our first century possible.
